Studying stale feature flag decisions without blaming the cache

Research on rule versions, polling, streaming, identity context, and evidence for delayed flag changes.
A user seeing yesterday's variation does not automatically mean a cache failed. The application may have evaluated a different identity, held an old rule set, fallen back during an outage, or persisted the earlier variation elsewhere.
OpenFeature defines provider behavior, evaluation context, and reasons. OpenFeature describes feature flags as a technique for changing application behavior without deploying new code. The material supplies shared terms, not a product-specific freshness promise.
Method: use synthetic identities against a test flag with recorded rule versions. Exercise a normal update, interrupted stream or poll, restart, missing context, provider error, and fallback. Capture evaluation time, rule version, context hash, variation, reason, and provider state.
Scope and inference limits: the runs can show which tested path returned a stale decision and whether the evidence identifies why. They cannot prove that every SDK, region, or long-lived process behaves the same way.
Limitations: vendor internals, clock differences, sampling, and hidden application persistence may leave the cause unresolved. Report that uncertainty. Product owners approve targeting, exposure, rollback, and production experiments.
